Satellites monitoring hurricanes are lost during launch by NASA

During Sunday's launch, NASA's Astra rocket failed to reach the required altitude, preventing two small satellites from reaching orbit.

NASA's Launch Services Program said on Twitter that the rocket's upper stage shut down early during the nominal launch of the TROPICS CubeSats.

A NASA post on its website before the launch described the TROPICS CubeSat constellation as a constellation of six small satellites that will 'study tropical cyclone formation and development, making observations more frequently than current weather satellites can.'.'

NASA awarded ASTRA a $7.95 million contract in February 2021 for three launches, each carrying two TROPICS instruments.

To become a major player in the market for launching small satellites, Astra promises more frequent launches and greater flexibility than companies using bigger rockets, such as SpaceX and Arianespace.

The company, however, has faced recurring failures with its signature two-stage rocket.  Due to an issue with the shells covering the satellites during launch in February, NASA's Astra second stage failed to reach orbit during a CubeSat mission.

Astra's CEO Chris Kemp said in a tweet Sunday that the company regrets not being able to deliver the first two TROPICS satellites.

'It is of the utmost significance to our team that we can successfully deliver the remaining TROPICS satellites.'
