Spacecraft returns to Kennedy Space Center's Vehicle Assembly Building after launching the Artemis I mission

First color images and spectroscopic data from James Webb Space Telescope are set to be released on July 12 at 10:30 a.m. ET. A live broadcast will be aired from Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

We have re-established contact with the spacecraft after experiencing communications problems after the July 4 launch for the CAPSTONE mission, or Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment. According to the team, the problem originated from an improperly formatted command sent to the spacecraft's radio.

A variety of social media platforms as well as NASA TV, the NASA app, and the agency's website will be available to view the show. With these images, Webb will reveal the infrared universe to the fullest extent of its capabilities.

While out of contact with Earth, the spacecraft operated safely on its own, based on data it received from the spacecraft. The CAPSTONE mission is still scheduled to reach lunar orbit on Nov. 13 as originally planned. Gateway, a Moon-orbiting outpost in our Artemis program, will take part in this mission as it tests a unique, elliptical lunar orbit.

A four-mile journey from launch pad 39B to the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center was completed on July 2 by the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft for the uncrewed Artemis I mission.

Teams will prepare SLS and Orion for return to the pad in the next few weeks by performing repairs and checking them out. A launch of Artemis I to the Moon is expected no earlier than August 2022 to allow NASA to check out rocket and spacecraft systems before astronauts travel to the Moon on Artemis II.

An Intelsat IS40e instrument called Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution, or TEMPO recently completed its first fully-integrated powered test. A launch date of January 2023 is currently being considered for TEMPO.

Air quality observations will be made from its geostationary orbit with unprecedented spatial precision. A total of 48 states will be included in its measurements, encompassing Puerto Rico, Mexico, northern Canada, and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

OSIRIS-REx's arm sank almost half a meter into the asteroid Bennu during a sample collection event in October 2020, scientists found after analyzing the data. Despite Bennu's thin surface, this was far deeper than expected.

It turns out that the surface of Bennu has such a loosely packed surface that walking onto it is akin to walking into a kids' play area filled with plastic balls. In the course of the TAG event, O-REx collected a handful of material as well as kicked up about six tons of loose rock.
