Summer could be the launch date for NASA's mega moon rocket

The first launch of the massive Space Launch System rocket could occur as soon as late August, although NASA officials stressed that these are tentative dates.

According to NASA's associate administrator for exploration systems development, Jim Free, the agency has not committed to it.

In just over a week before launch, we'll make a commitment on the part of the agency. Team members are working towards these dates and have a plan to meet them.'

On August 18, NASA should be able to roll out SLS from the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center if all goes according to plan.

NASA is on track to complete the remaining work required to launch SLS and Orion, the capsule that sits atop the rocket. Even a tentative launch date indicates that NASA is on track.

During the rocket's last wet rehearsal, a hydrogen leak was discovered, and officials halted the final countdown earlier than planned to repair the leak.

A flight termination system has also been implemented by NASA, which will ensure that the mission can be aborted in a safe way if it subsequently needs to be aborted for any reason after takeoff.

As part of the agency's ambitious Artemis program, this uncrewed launch is the first of several flights planned. Humans will return to the moon by the middle of this decade if the Artemis program succeeds in its short-term goals.

It is the agency's belief that Artemis will mark the beginning of a new phase in space exploration, one that will take humans further into our solar system than they have ever gone before, one that could pave the way for further exploration of the universe.

There are a few specific objectives NASA has in mind for this flight. In addition to testing the heat shield on Orion - which is very important because the agency ultimately wants it to carry humans; analyzing the communication and navigation systems on the launch vehicle; and retrieving the Orion capsule after splashdown to get even more data.

While NASA has a few more launch opportunities later in the year, the fact that a preliminary launch date has been set less than six weeks before the end of the year is encouraging.

It is our goal to ensure that everyone understands that this is a first launching attempt for this vehicle, and therefore, we want to make sure that everyone understands what that means,' said Free.

It's important to be careful. In addition to working hard to meet those dates I gave you, we will put ourselves in the best position to be confident in them.'
