The asteroid, which is twice as wide as a football field, will pass Earth in the early hours of Thursday morning. In the few minutes following 12:23 a.m., there is a high probability of the asteroid passing nearby.
The asteroid, known as 2022 OE2, was discovered by NASA just days ago, on July 26. About twice as wide as an American football field, the meaty space rock measures between 557 and 1,246 feet wide.
The astronomers have also been able to confirm that asteroid 2022 OE2 is classified as an Apollo-class asteroid, which means it orbits the sun and crosses the path of the Earth's orbit, as last reported by Live Science.
A large asteroid would release more energy than 1,000 nuclear bombs. This one will, however, miss Earth by a wide margin, according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
The distance between Earth and asteroid 2022 OE2 is projected to be somewhere between 3.2 million miles and 3.2 million kilometers, a distance which is more than 13 times that which separates Earth from the moon on average.
As a point of reference, this is a significant distance from the asteroid 2022 NF which came within even a little over 56,000 miles of Earth on July 7 - or about 23% of Earth's average distance from the moon.
A NASA study has estimated the trajectory of tens of thousands of near-Earth objects like this one beyond the end of the century. NASA has said Earth will not be in danger of a cataclysmic asteroid impact for at least a hundred years.
The orbit of a large asteroid can be altered by even a minor change in trajectory - such as a collision with another asteroid or by the gravitational pull of a planet - and put it on a potentially catastrophic course for our planet.
As a result, space agencies place a high priority on planetary defense. NASA launched the Double Asteroid Redirection Test in November 2021 to deflect an asteroid from colliding with Earth in autumn 2022.
The collision won't destroy the asteroid, but it may alter its orbital path slightly, Live Science reported. If some future space rock poses an imminent threat to our planet, this mission will test asteroid deflection.
