The breathtaking pictures of Mars Canyon would stretch from New York to Los Angeles

As part of the Mars Express mission, the European Space Agency has released stunning images of the enormous canyon of Valles Marineris that were taken by the spacecraft in 2011.

The Valles Marineris is a gorge on Mars that cuts across the planet similar to the Grand Canyon on the American continent, but the gorge on Mars is 20 times wider and five times deeper than the Canyon on Earth.

A Martian canyon stretches over 2,485 miles, is over 124 miles wide, and is over four miles deep, dwarfing The Grand Canyon in size. In other words, the Valles Marineris would extend from New York to Los Angeles.

The canyon is the largest in the solar system. Scientists know that the Colorado River eroded the Grand Canyon five million years ago, but they are unsure how the Valles Marineris was formed.

The theory that refers to the crack in the ground is that tectonic plates are drifting apart and causing it to open up, and there is another theory that claims the crack was created by ice melting into rivers along the way.

As an alternative, a theory that has been proposed is that the canyon of Pavonis Mons is a channel created by lava flowing down the slope from the mountain's flank.

A European Space Agency photo shows two trenches in western Valles Marineris. As the Alp's tallest mountain, Mont Blanc, doesn't even reach the top ridge of the Tithonium Chasma, the photos do not do it justice.

A patch of dark sand from a nearby volcanic region adds contrast to the image at the top of Tithonium Chasma. Over 9,800 feet high, light-toned mounts rise next to the dark dunes. In Alaska, Mount Hesperus rises to 9,828 feet.

With a resolution of about 10 meters, the Mars Express, launched in 2003, has a High-Resolution Stereo Camera. The camera combines images at two different resolutions to achieve pointing accuracy, which is one of its greatest strengths.

Mars' topography can also be viewed in full color in the 3D image. The spacecraft was named after its relatively short interplanetary voyage since it was launched at a time when Earth and Mars were closer than they had been in about 60,000 years.
