The deepest wreck discovered by explorers is a WWII Navy destroyer

Explorers have found the deepest wreck ever discovered in the Philippines, where a U.S. Navy destroyer engaged a superior Japanese fleet in the largest sea battle of World War II.

A USS Samuel B. Roberts, commonly known as 'Sammy B,' was found broken into two pieces on Wednesday at a depth of 6,985 meters (22,916 feet).

In other words, it's 426 meters (1,400 feet) deeper than the USS Johnston, which was discovered in the Philippine Sea last year by American explorer Victor Vescovo, who founded Caladan Oceanic Expeditions in Dallas.

“The opportunity to locate this incredibly famous ship, and retell her tale of heroism and duty to those who may not know of the ship and her crew's sacrifice, was an extraordinary honor,” said Vescovo, a former Navy commander.

As a part of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Sammy B. participated in the Battle off Samar in October 1944, in which the Imperial Japanese Navy lost its largest number of ships and failed to dislodge the U.S. forces from Leyte, which they invaded earlier to liberate the Philippines.

Some records claim that the destroyer disabled a Japanese heavy cruiser and severely damaged another with a torpedo.

She was critically hit by the lead battleship Yamato after burning nearly all of her ammunition. 89 of the 224-man crew died while 120 were saved, including the captain, Lieutenant Commander Robert Copeland.

He stated that there was 'no higher honor' than to have led men who displayed such incredible courage in the battle against overwhelming odds, from which survival could not be expected.

“I believe that this site is a hallowed war grave and that it serves to remind us of the great sacrifices that previous generations made to ensure our freedom today,” Cox said.

Up until the discovery, the historical records of where the wreck was located were not very accurate, according to the explorers.

EYOS said the search involved the deepest side-scan sonar ever installed and operated on a submersible, well beyond the standard commercial limit of 6,000 meters (19,685 feet).
