The Earth is rotating faster, and the effect could be devastating

This past July 29, the Earth broke its record for the shortest day as it completed a full rotation in 1.59 milliseconds less than it normally takes for its 24-hour rotation to occur.

It has been reported in New Delhi that the Earth is rotating faster than usual. The Earth has recently broken its record for the shortest day: on July 29, the Earth completed a full rotation in less than 24 hours instead of the normal 24 hours.

There was a 1.59-millisecond difference between the full spin of the planet and the 24 hours of the day recorded by the scientists. It should be noted, however, that this is not the first time it has accelerated its speed.

As per the reports, there was a record-setting shortest month on the planet back in 2020, the shortest month ever recorded since 1960, according to the reports. It was the shortest day of all time in 2020 when the planet's rotation was 1.47 milliseconds under 24 hours on July 19.

In the following year, the planet continued to spin at a generally increased rate, though it did not break any records in that regard. It has been suggested that the beginning of a 50-year phase of shorter days is just around the corner, according to Interesting Engineering (IE).

The reason behind the different speeds of the spin of Earth is still unknown, but some scientists have come up with theories that suggest that it could be because of the melting of glaciers, which means less weight on the poles, or because of the motions of our planet's inner molten core.

Many scientists believe that it can also be due to seismic activity or the Chandler wobble, which can be a small deviation in the Earth's axis of rotation due to seismic activity.

As reported in the Independent, if the Earth continues to spin at an increasing rate it could lead to the introduction of negative leap seconds to maintain the rate at which the Earth orbits the Sun by atomic clock measurements.

The negative leap second could, however, confuse gadgets and communications systems. The clock progresses from 23:59:59 to 23:59:60 before resetting to 00:00:00. A time jump like this can cause programs to crash and data to be corrupted.
