The Earth's rotation speeds up, resulting in a record-breaking shortest day

The planet we live on sometimes seems to agree with us when it comes to wanting the day to end as soon as possible. Since scientists began measuring the rotational speed of the Earth with atomic clocks, the Earth has set the record for the shortest day.

A planet completes one rotation in less than 24 hours or 1.59 milliseconds. The Earth almost broke this record soon after when it completed a rotation in just 1.50 milliseconds less than 24 hours.

A measurement called 'length of day' describes the speed and duration of Earth's rotation. It is the difference between the time it takes the planet to complete one rotation on its axis and 86,400 seconds in a day.

The Earth spins slower when the length of the day is a positive number and rising, and vice versa. Our planet has been in a hurry in recent years. As of 2020, the planet experienced its 28 shortest days ever recorded, according to Time and Date.

The planet continued its fast-paced pace in 2021, even though its shortest day was shorter than its shortest in 2020. The Earth seems to be speeding up again in 2022.

The graph below shows how the length of day measurement has been on a steady downward trend for quite some time, according to Time and Date from the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service.

The Earth's rotation is becoming faster and faster, but what is causing it to get that fast? What could be the cause? The answer to that question is not as clear as it seems.

The reason for this trend is not very clear, and scientists have difficulty predicting the length of the day more than a year in advance. However, some theories have been proposed to explain the phenomenon.

The decrease in the length of the day has caused some scientists to speculate that it might have something to do with a phenomenon known as the Chandler Wobble.

As the Earth rotates, there is a small deviation in the axis of rotation. This is referred to as the Chandler Wobble. However, that's only one of the possible explanations, and there are still many unanswered questions.
