The ESA is in talks with Elon Musk's SpaceX to allow temporary use of its rockets

The European Space Agency intends to temporarily borrow launchers from Elon Musk's SpaceX because of the Ukraine conflict. As Europe's Ariane 6 is delayed, the private American rival has emerged as a key contender for plugging a temporary gap alongside Japan and India.

'The ESA is discussing two and a half options. One is SpaceX, which is clear. Another may be Japan,' Josef Aschbacher told Reuters.' Another option is India,' he said. 'Japan is waiting for the inaugural flight of its next-generation rocket.'.

'As for SpaceX, I'd say that is the more operational and certainly one of the backup launches we are looking at.'The talks are still in an exploratory phase, and any backup solution would be temporary, according to Aschbacher.

As a matter of course, we need to ensure that they are suitable. It's not like getting on a bus,' he said. Satellite and launcher interfaces, for example, must be suitable, and vibrations associated with the launch must not compromise the payload.

A commercial proposal has not yet been requested. SpaceX's Falcon 9 has already attracted customers cutting ties with Moscow because Russia invaded Ukraine.

The satellite internet firm OneWeb, a rival of SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet venture, booked at least one Falcon 9 launch in March. In addition, an Indian launch has been booked.

A new version of Northrop Grumman's Antares rocket, whose Russian-made engines were withdrawn by Moscow due to sanctions, will carry NASA cargo to the International Space Station on three Falcon 9 missions.

The Italian Vega, Russian Soyuz, and Ariane 5 rockets carry small, medium, and heavy payloads. As of last month, Ariane 6 will launch in October. Vega C debuted last month. ESA will present a backup plan by November.

He stated that it is likely that backup launches will be necessary. We would need interim solutions for this order of magnitude.'Aschbacher said the Ukraine conflict had exposed the failure of Europe's decade-long partnership with Russia.

'We have been too dependent on Russia. And this wake-up call should cause decision-makers as much as I do to realize that we need to strengthen our European capability and independence.'

The Russian president downplayed the possibility of retreating from the International Space Station. Russian space chief Yuri Borisov said last month that Russia will withdraw from the ISS 'after 2024'.

The Russian space agency had not yet communicated any new pullout plans, according to Borisov. According to Aschbacher, 'operationally, the work on the space station is proceeding almost nominally.' It is impossible to avoid interdependence.
