The James Webb Space Telescope Snaps the Enchanting Turmoil of 'Cartwheel Galaxy'

A galaxy is tangled in stellar gymnastics somewhere in space, bursting with chaos, gracefully swirling, and cartwheeling towards two smaller galaxies.

As NASA's James Webb Space Telescope captured such a majestic view, we are allowed to see it in full perspective as two galaxies on the verge of collision collide with a massive pink speckled galaxy.

As JWST looks into the chaos of the Cartwheel Galaxy, it discovered new information on star formation. An infrared image captured by Webb shows a Cartwheel and two smaller companion galaxies amidst numerous galaxies.

This image reveals the evolution of the Cartwheel Galaxy over billions of years, according to NASA. After all, the Cartwheel Galaxy is 500 million light-years away in the Sculptor constellation, according to NASA.

A spiral galaxy and a smaller galaxy collide at high speed, but the smaller galaxy cannot be seen. Collision impacted galaxy shape and structure. This galaxy has two rings: an inner and outer ring. Two rings spread from the collision's core like ripples in a pond.

The object is what astronomers call a 'ring galaxy,' a less common structure than spiral galaxies.NASA said that the core contains a large amount of hot material and is full of young star clusters. A 440 million-year-old outer ring is dominated by star formation and supernovae.

A previous Hubble Space Telescope study examined the Cartwheel. Mystery surrounds this enchanting galaxy due to dust obscuring the view. NASA claims that they can now better understand the Cartwheel that Webb can detect infrared light.

As the main imager on Webb, the Near-Infrared Camera detects light wavelengths between 0.6 and 5 microns in the near-infrared, revealing additional stars than those visible to the naked eye.

NASA reports that many young stars are currently forming in the outer ring because infrared light shows newborn stars less obscured by dust. The Cartwheel is going through a very fleeting phase, NASA said. Before the collision, the galaxy was just a typical spiral galaxy like the Milky Way.

Even though Webb presents a glimpse of the Cartwheel's current state, it also sheds light on the galaxy's important historical events and what the future may hold for the galaxy as a whole.
