The Kiwi company Rocket Lab is bringing the world back to the Moon and beyond

NASA's Capstone spacecraft was successfully released from Earth's gravity last night, setting it up for a potentially long journey to the Moon.

The mission marks the company's first venture into deep space, and it is expected to open up the way to the Moon for astronauts in 2024.

Peter Beck, the founder of Rocket Laboratories, told Morning Report that the most exciting aspect of the project was that it would allow the company to get to other parts of the near solar system more frequently and at a lower cost.

'The spacecraft was launched five or six days ago, and over the next few days, its orbit has been raised as well as its velocity, and the burn last night was the culmination of all that work, sending it on a trans-lunar injection, and breaking free of Earth's gravity.'

From the Māhia  Peninsula in Hawke's Bay, the company launched its Capstone microsatellite on 28 June.

In this particular trajectory, he predicted that it would take about three months to get to the Moon, but it was intended to go many months beyond it.

The Capstone spacecraft will reach a distance of approximately one million and one-half kilometers out into deep space. After this, it will use the Moon's gravity to pull back in and put itself into a Halo orbit, which will serve as its parking orbit for reentering the Moon's orbit.

'What we demonstrated here this week was that a small launch vehicle and a small payload can actually travel to the Moon, Venus, Mars, and asteroids for that matter.

'To me, the most exciting part of the moon mission was not only that we managed to reach the moon, but that we also created a spacecraft with which we can travel to the planets within our solar system for relatively low sums of money and frequently.' He said the private Venus mission would take place next year.
