The Moon is returning to us after 50 years writes TOM LEONARD

The american astronaut Gene Cernan scratched his daughter's initials in the dust next to his footprints before returning home, thinking that no one would ever undo his sentimental gesture. The date was December 1972, and captain Cernan was about to follow his two companions back up the ladder of the Apollo 17 module in preparation for the mission.

The footprints and letters are undoubtedly still there - there is no wind to blow them away - but Captain Cernan's fear that he would be the last person to walk on the moon looks unlikely now.

As the first lunar mission since Apollo 17 finally blasts off into space in a week, 100,000 spectators will watch it from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. Many of those spectators weren't even born when Cernan wrote his daughter's initials in moondust.

As on Apollo missions, astronauts who travel on the Artemis programme won't just step on the moon for a few minutes to do some lunar sightseeing and collect some souvenirs. It is their intention to remain and build a space station in lunar orbit as well as lunar bases at the south pole of the moon.

It is hoped that these two facilities will enable NASA to test new technologies and operational procedures for future planetary missions, such as a crewed mission to Mars in the 2040s and trips to asteroids as well.A new generation of astronauts needs to be safely brought to and from the moon, however, and that will be a giant step for mankind.

It has been 50 years since NASA launched a rocket designed for deep space. On August 29, the Space Launch System rocket and Orion capsule, which it carries, will launch for their maiden flight and first mission, Artemis 1.In six weeks, the capsule will return to the Pacific Ocean after travelling around the moon for a couple of weeks.

The rocket almost looks retro when viewed from a distance. The Saturn V seems to be looming ahead,' says Nasa administrator Bill Nelson. The rocket and spacecraft are totally different, new, highly sophisticated, and more sophisticated.

An Artemis 2 flight aims to take astronauts around the moon in 2024, with a third mission landing on the moon as early as 2025, but this first Artemis 1 flight will not have human passengers. The craft won't be empty, however. In the Orion capsule, three human-sized test dummies will serve as the crew, whose bodies will be swarming with radiation and vibration sensors.
