The moon's wild spots where astronauts will land have been revealed by NASA

NASA plans to return astronauts to the moon's surface in late 2025 and revealed 13 landing regions there where planetary scientists believe water, ice, and other resources could be hidden in shadowy craters.

As shown in the map below, the sites are mostly located on crater rims or over crater ridges. At a press briefing on August 19, NASA's Planetary Science Division's lunar science lead, Sarah Noble, described these sites as unknown extraterrestrial terrain.

'We haven't explored this place before.'NASA's return to the moon, dubbed Artemis, aims to establish a permanent presence on Earth's natural satellite, which may one day lead to a Mars mission.

The light from the south pole of the moon is eerie. During this time of year, the sun barely rises over the lunar hills. There are often profoundly long, evolving shadows and dim surroundings in this world.

The landing regions, which each contain around 10 landing sites, will however all have continuous sunlight nearby for the 6 1/2 days astronauts will explore the moon's surface.

Having access to sunlight is critical to the success of a long-term stay on the moon, as it provides a power source and minimizes temperature variation,' NASA officials said.

NASA astronauts - including a woman who became the first woman to walk on the moon - will collect samples from the South Pole to study how humans adapt to low gravity on the moon in late 2025.

A mission planner hoping to perform the landing of Artemis by the early part of 2024 hopes to have finally selected a site 18 months before the launch.

As a result, these sites were released for scientific vetting by the larger scientific community. Bringing astronauts safely to the moon is a challenging and expensive endeavor; NASA wants to make the best, most informed decision possible.

'The space agency reports that water is vital for human exploration since it can be used for drinking, cooling equipment, breathing, and making rocket fuel for missions deeper into the solar system.
