The Ryugu samples are the cleanest out of the outer solar system

A sample brought back by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency's Hayabusa-2 mission may be the most contaminant-free rock ever examined from outer space.

A team of Japanese researchers at JAMSTEC investigated the samples brought to Earth by the Japanese aircraft in December 2020 and found they were the most 'uncontaminated'.

The information gained from the analysis of this material will assist scientists in getting a clearer picture of the chemistry of the particles incorporated into asteroid Ryugu. It has been published in the journal Nature as part of this study.

The history of our solar system goes back 4.6 billion years. Moreover, since asteroids and comets flying around in outer space as time capsules, a lot of transformations have occurred in this ever-expanding universe. Early solar system chemistry can be found in these space rocks.

Asteroids have in the past been studied only after they have entered the Earth's atmosphere, which can alter the composition of the sample, so they are best studied after entering the Earth's atmosphere.

The longer the samples are delayed, the more likely it is that they will change. Terrestrial weathering refers to this process. Hayabusa-2 collected samples that were free of terrestrial weathering and contaminants.

“As the asteroid Ryugu formed from outer solar system material, the material has never been significantly heated and so retains its primitive characteristics, researchers noted, elaborating on the sample analysis.

The nitrogen and hydrogen in Ryugu's sample deduced their origin from the outer solar system. The nitrogen and hydrogen isotopic composition of the Ryugu particles was compared to that of extra-terrestrial material.

The data that came out suggested that the Ryugu particles were formed in the outer areas of the solar system, which makes sense.

The asteroid also shows the first evidence of water-mineral-organic interaction an asteroid. As a result, the asteroid is a potential source of organic materials and water for planets in the inner solar system, including ours.
