The SpaceX rocket lands at sea after launching 52 Starlink satellites

The latest batch of Starlink satellites from SpaceX was launched into orbit on Tuesday and landed on a ship at sea on Wednesday (Aug 9).

To launch 52 Starlink spacecraft into space, NASA's Falcon 9 rocket made its first flight Tuesday, August 11, at 10:14 p.m. EDT (0214 GMT on August 10).

In less than nine minutes after launch, the Falcon 9's first stage landed vertically on the SpaceX drone ship A Shortfall of Gravitas, which was located off the Florida coast in the Atlantic Ocean.

SpaceX confirmed via Twitter that about 15 minutes after liftoff, the Falcon 9 upper stage continued to power its way into low Earth orbit, deploying the Starlink satellites as planned. A major goal for SpaceX is to reuse rockets, which it considers an important step toward colonizing Mars.

SpaceX's mission description for Tuesday's Falcon 9 flight (opens in new tab) says the first stage had flown twice before. The number of orbital missions launched by three different Falcon 9 boosters is impressive, but it's far from SpaceX's record.

SpaceX had a very busy day with the Starlink launch. Additionally today, the company conducted 'static fire' engine tests with prototypes of its deep-space transportation system, Starship, at its South Texas facility.

In the coming months, SpaceX plans to launch the first orbital test flight of the Starship program with Booster 7 and Ship 24.

Hundreds of thousands of people around the world receive broadband service from SpaceX's Starlink satellite. SpaceX has already launched more than 3,000 Starlink satellites.

However, the company is planning to launch 30,000 more; it has permission to loft 12,000 satellites and has applied for permission to loft another 30,000.

With tonight's launch, SpaceX completed its 35th orbital flight in 2022, a record for the company. 2021 was the previous record for most orbital missions in a year for the company.
