The surface of Mars is cracking through bizarre polygons

HIRISE is a spacecraft mounted on an orbiting satellite that has access to the High-Resolution Imaging Experiment camera, revealing that spring is finally here on Mars.

A recent image taken by NASA on March 30, 2022, shows zigzags of white cracks cracking across the Martian soil at high latitudes, and black and blue mist occasionally moving in between the cracks.

Researchers at the University of Arizona, which manages the HIRISE mission, said the zig-zags and colorful sprays in the martian spring were a signature feature of the world beneath the ice.

According to the researchers, 'Water and dry ice were both important in contributing to the sculpting of Mars' surface at high latitudes,' they wrote. 'Soil splits into polygons when water ice freezes in it.'

In the springtime, the edges of these polygons will become cracked and frayed, due to the process of sublimation, when surface ice will transform from a solid into a gas.

The researchers said that when dry ice transforms into vents, it leaves dark, fan-shaped deposits of particles spread across the Martian surface. Bright marks stain the ground where dark particles sink back into the dry ice.

Multiple ice vents can open and close at the same time, spraying particles in different directions across the Martian surface based on the wind conditions.

The cause of the multiple lights and dark streaks seen from a single vent can be traced to this. Throughout the seasons, ice expands and contracts, slowly warping the Martian landscape.

NASA launched its Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2006, and the HiRISE camera rides inside its orbit. It travels between 155 and 196 miles over the planet, capturing a wealth of amusing and bizarre images.

The orbiter spotted in 2018 a formation of rocks and craters that looked like Muppet Beaker's bug-eyed face, miaowing near the south pole of Mars.

The images of the Mars orbiter's Valles Marineris crater, the largest canyon in our solar system is perhaps even more impressive.

The Martian Grand Canyon is near twice that long and three times deeper than the Grand Canyon on Earth; scientists aren't sure how it formed. Muppets who were involved kept the truth a secret.
