There is a break from flying for NASA's Mars helicopter

It will get more vacation time this year than most Americans since the helicopter is currently parked in the Jezero Crater on Mars.

In a statement released on Wednesday, NASA announced that its solar-powered rotorcraft would be put on hold for several weeks.

As it is dust season and winter on Mars, the helicopter team said in a status update that there is less sunlight and more dust in the air to recharge Ingenuity's batteries.

When dust levels subside, the overachieving helicopter -- which demonstrated that powered, controlled flight is possible on another planet -- is not expected to take to the air for the first time since the helicopter proved powered and controlled flight is possible.

It is not much different from why people take vacations since the flyer will have a chance to recharge its batteries during that time.

It was a high-risk, high-reward technology demonstration that Ingenuity took to Mars. Even though it was not expected to fly for 29 consecutive flights since it was launched in April 2021, Ingenuity has surpassed all expectations.

A new break from the flight has been announced for the rover on June 11, which will extend its already lengthy downtime. In this situation, it moved positions to be more in touch with its companion rover, the Perseverance rover. 

Due to increased dust and cold temperatures, the helicopter encountered several challenges over the past couple of weeks, and its last flight was marred by issues with a dead sensor.

In a tweet Tuesday, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said: Don't worry, the team expects the helicopter to take flight again in coming years despite the tough conditions.

As NASA JPL noted in the tweet, the team is planning to keep the helicopter flying for many years to come.
