There will be a supermoon in July that will be the biggest and brightest of the year

The full buck moon of July 2022 is offering skywatchers a special summer treat, as it is the second of two consecutive 'supermoons.' What you need to know about the July full moon when to see it, and why it's so special this year.

On Wednesday, July 13, 2:37 p.m. Eastern time, the first full moon of the summer season (the June moon turned full a week before the summer solstice) will reach its fullest phase. Thus, it will be at its biggest and brightest when it rises above the horizon on Wednesday evening.

For those who would rather view the moon on Thursday, July 14, the moon will appear 99% illuminated and will look 99% full Tuesday night, July 12.

On Thursday, the July supermoon will rise over Newark and New York City at 9 p.m. and set at 6:10 a.m., according to TimeAndDate.com. Toward the end of the week, a near-full moon will rise again at 9:48 p.m. Thursday and will set at 7:32 a.m. on Friday.

The supermoon is a full moon whose orbit is elliptical and is closer to Earth than an average full moon. When it rises over the horizon or when the atmospheric conditions are ideal, it can appear slightly bigger and brighter than usual.

The Supermoon is considered by many astronomy buffs, including Sky & Telescope magazine to be a full moon that is less than 223,000 miles from the Earth at its closest point in its orbit. As a benchmark for supermoons, it uses 223,694 miles (360,000 kilometers), which is a lot of miles.

The distances used by different experts are different, so some experts classify more moons as supermoons while others classify fewer. More experts are predicting the July full moon will be the second of only two supermoons this year (the other was in June).

Some consider May's full moon a supermoon, and others place August's full moon in the same category, bringing the annual total to four.

The full moon on July 13 will be the closest one of the year based on its distance from the Earth at the time it turns full - 222,089 miles away - making it the biggest and brightest of the year.
