There's a special reason why June's full moon will be spectacular

It's always fun to view a full moon when it's low in the sky and shining brightly just above the horizon. This month, you're in for a special treat. It will also be a supermoon on June 14, known as the Strawberry Moon. It will be larger and brighter than other full moons.

If you are not familiar with the term 'Strawberry Moon,' you may wonder whether the moon will appear pink or strawberry-colored. Despite appearing bright and large, the moon will be its typical yellowish color when it rises on June 14.

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, June's full moon is either the last full moon of spring or the first full moon of summer depending on the date. Strawberry Moon gets its name from Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota people since this full moon occurs around the time strawberries are harvested in the northeast U.S.

An elliptical orbit is how the moon orbits Earth, not a circular orbit. According to NASA, the average distance between the moon and Earth varies throughout the month and even the year.

As the moon has an elliptical orbit, there are times when it is closer to Earth than at other times. The perigee is the point in the moon's orbit when it is closest to the Earth. It is referred to as a supermoon when the moon reaches that point because it appears 30 percent brighter and 14 percent larger than other full moons.

There is no official definition for how close the moon must be to Earth to be considered a supermoon. Astrologer Richard Nolle first coined the term 'supermoon' in 1979, and according to EarthSky, a full moon or new moon is considered a supermoon if it's within 90 percent of its closest point to Earth.

The average distance between Earth and the moon is 238,855 miles, but on June 14, the moon will be 222,238 miles from Earth, making it a supermoon.

That's not the time to look for the Strawberry Supermoon. Watch the moon rise above the horizon after sunset instead. Using The Old Farmer's Almanac's Moonrise and Moonset Calculator, you can see when the moon will rise in your area on June 14 - or any other time, for that matter. Click here to access the calculator.

Time and Date explains why you'll want to watch the moon rise: When the moon is low in the sky, it appears bigger and brighter than when it is high in the sky because of what's called the Moon Illusion.

The best place to view the Strawberry Supermoon will be somewhere with an unobstructed view of the horizon, since the Moon Illusion occurs when the moon is low in the sky. You'll be able to see the Strawberry Supermoon at its brightest and largest in open fields, parking lots, and other places that don't have trees blocking the horizon.
