Two hurricane monitoring satellites are lost during launch by NASA

NASA reported Sunday that two small satellites designed to study hurricane development failed to enter orbit when their Astra rocket stopped before reaching the required altitude.

The upper stage of the rocket closed down early, preventing the CubeSats from reaching orbit, NASA's Launch Services Program said on Twitter.

The TROPICS CubeSat constellation was described on NASA's website before the launch as six 'shoebox-sized' satellites that will be used to study tropical cyclone formation and development, providing observations more frequently than current weather satellites are able to..'

In February 2021, NASA awarded Astra a $7.95 million contract for three launches that will each carry two TROPICS instruments.

Aspiring to become a major player in the market for satellite launches, Astra promises more frequent launches with more flexibility than companies using space rockets like SpaceX or Arianespace.

The start-up has faced recurring problems with its signature two-stage rocket failing to reach orbit.

Another NASA CubeSat mission failed to reach orbit in February as the second stage of the Astra rocket failed to release the shell around the satellites during launch.

In a tweet, Astra CEO Chris Kemp expressed regret over losing the first two TROPICS satellites. 'Our entire team is dedicated to maintaining the trust of our customers and to successfully delivering the remaining TROPICS satellites.'
