As NASA begins to shut down key systems this year, the Voyager space probes, among the most influential objects in space history, are entering the final leg of their voyage.
Although the computers on board need little electricity, the probes have run out of power after 45 years of use. The decision to cut off more systems is intended to extend the lifespan of the probes.
As a result of the probes wasting about 4 watts of energy every year, some systems had to be turned off to save other systems, as reported by Scientific American magazine.
As NASA has been attempting to prolong the lifespan of the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes for years, different systems on the probes have been shut down during that time.
A number of the most famous photographs of space that were taken with probe cameras have been taken offline in order to preserve the power supply.
In Voyager 1, seven of the original 14 systems are still functioning, while in Voyager 2, five of the original systems are still functioning.
Scientists hope the probes will be able to transmit data to Earth, at least for the remainder of this decade, by redirecting power to other vital systems.
