The lawsuit
A lawsuit that accused the parent company of Facebook of violating users' privacy by tracking their movements without consent through their smartphones was settled for $37.5 million by Meta Platforms Inc (META.O), which was included as a defendant in the action.
Preliminary settlement
The preliminary settlement of the planned class action lawsuit was submitted on Monday in the federal court in San Francisco, and the approval of the deal is required by the judge.
Allegations on Facebook to breach California law
It resolved allegations that Facebook had breached California law and its own privacy policy by acquiring data from users who had switched off Location Services on their mobile devices. The allegations had been made that Facebook had violated the law in California. The users claimed that even though they did not want to share their locations with Facebook, the company inferred where they were based on their IP (internet protocol) addresses, and then used that information to send them targeted advertising despite the fact that they did not want to share their locations with Facebook.
The settlement announcement
The settlement announced on Monday applies to Facebook users in the United States who began using the platform after January 30, 2015. Meta asserted that she had done nothing wrong by accepting to the settlement.
Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg
On Tuesday, it did not react right away to requests for a statement that were made. Facebook and its Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg testified before the United States Congress in June 2018 that the business utilises location data "to help advertisers target people in particular places."

Lundy et al v Facebook Inc
The legal action was initially initiated in November of 2018. According to the documents relating to the settlement, the attorneys representing the plaintiffs could ask for up to thirty percent of the money that was awarded on Monday to cover their fees. The case is known as Lundy et al. v. Facebook Inc. and is being heard in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California as case number 18-06793.
