The latest APK teardown of Google's Play Services app reveals the American tech giant's efforts to improve the overall Android experience as more Wear OS devices hit the market. The Google Play Services beta version 22.32.12 teardown by XDA-Developers revealed that the company is planning to add the ability to back up smartwatch data when switching devices.
A string titled 'companion_backup_opt_in_title' included the prompts: 'Back up your device with Google One/Back up by Google One/ Choose backup account'.A Wear OS smartwatch must be factory reset when switching to a new Android smartphone. A backup option would make the experience much smoother.
The mention of Google One, a paid subscription service, is interesting. Users do not need a Google One subscription to manage Google's Android and iOS device data backups through the Google One app. As per the report, Google One subscribers pay for extra storage on their Google accounts, so this feature cannot be hidden behind a paywall. Google has also been reportedly rolling out updates to its Android and Wear OS cameras.
While the Google Camera app for Pixel devices receives some minor updates, the Wear OS app, which is essentially a remote control for Pixel owners, receives several big updates and is a complete reorganization from its previous release. A camera app update for Wear OS has been long overdue. As well as the Pixel Watch, which will run the latest Wear OS, Google is expected to launch its new Pixel Watch soon.
