A $99 audio accessory has been announced by Logitech for the Meta Quest 2 VR headset, aiming to improve the sound quality that comes out of the device.

The Chorus provides an open-back, off-ear speaker, at the same time as Valve Index, which lets you remain more present in reality compared to in-ear or over-ear headphones. A speaker can be swiveled to find the best position for your ears, and it slides onto each side of the VR headset.

Through the volume rocker on Quest 2, you can control the volume of each song. As far as the headset's power is concerned, it's powered by the Quest 2's USB-C port, however, it supports USB-C passthrough, so you're able to keep your headset charged or connect other devices to the headset.

With custom-tuned drivers, the speakers deliver both "biggest moments in the metaverse as well as the finest details." Moreover, because they have an open back, ambient sound is not blocked. As with any design approach, there are pros and cons. There are times when they provide a warmer, more lifelike sound, and the open-back design might make it safer for you to play VR games as well.

As I mentioned earlier, the biggest downside is that there's very little noise isolation, both for listeners and those within earshot. As a result, these might not be the best choice for people who seek privacy while using virtual reality.

The competition for Logitech isn't exactly fierce. If you want more immersion than the strap-integrated speakers in the Quest 2, this could be a worthwhile upgrade. While the upgrade option is available to Quest 2 owners, it is not the only one.

A set of strap converters can be used to get a similar effect to what the Chorus claims to offer. The Quest 2 can also be connected to any wired 3.5mm headphone jack, so it's not much of a hack.
